Thank you so much for visiting!
This is me, I’m the face behind DesignerMim. My name is Miriam. I live and work in Cape Town, South Africa. I’ve been working professionally as a creative for over 13 years. I worked at a South African clothing retailer for over 11 years. However, I always dreamed of having my own creative business and when 2020 ‘happened’, I realised I couldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth (what a strange saying!).
Having a lifelong passion for art and design, I love working in many forms of design. My work varies from vibrant illustrations, to energetic repeating surface patterns, to quirky graphics for clothing, to the subtleties of good label design… and now a little front end dev too!
My site is a work in progress, so please come back soon as I’m launching it in phases. Have a look around and tell me what you think. I’m new to front end dev, so please do let me know if you find any bugs!
Please have a look at my portfolio to see the kind of styles I have been working in recently. Give me a shout if there is anything you’d love printed in your home, for your kid’s bedroom, or for you to be wearing on a daily!
With a moka pot continuously on the stove! Nah, it’s not so bad. I get pretty engrossed in my work as I am highly focussed, passionate, and very purpose driven. I love creating original work that is colourful, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Life can be a little hard sometimes, and I find a pop of colour (or more!) really does boost the mood!
I love to continuously experiment and broaden my knowledge with new ways of working, motifs, materials — you name it. Changing things up and trying to have a little having fun while working are important to me.
Coming from a many years in retail, I am very aware of the effects of the fashion and packaging industry and am keen to do what I can to support and work with local sustainable suppliers. Having sourced local manufacturers and printers who are aligned with my thinking, I am confident that you will love the end result even more! If you already have suppliers you trust, I am happy to work with them to ensure all parties are happy with the outcome. As you’re probably aware, there’s been a global shift toward sustainable textiles and paper based products and I certainly am keen to support that wherever feasible.
Have a look at my briefing tips to see my process & get an understanding of what I need from you as my potential customer. I find it’s best to get as much info up front to minimise back and forth and keep everyone happy.
Being inspired by others is totally acceptable and I’m confident enough in my abilities to come up with my own version of something instead of copying it directly. I really, really do not like being asked to copy other designers.
I’m an avid runner. I love running 3 times a week to keep me sane (well, kinda) and clear my head. I’m not the fastest nor able to go the furthest but I love it nonetheless! Whenever we take our dog for a run on the mountain she keeps coming back to check I’m still coming 😂
We have a rescue dog named Josie. Life has certainly become more, ahem, eventful since she’s been round. She’s the life and soul of any party and gets up to such funny & animated antics!
What else? I’m very family oriented and enjoy spending my downtime outdoors. I to love travel — both South Africa and abroad. I love the variety of tastes & smells, and meeting people who see the world differently… and of course the art and architecture of other cities always intrigues me.

Right, I get this one a lot! I discovered this amazing discipline when I was doing research about what I wanted to study and specialise in. Surface Pattern Design immediately grabbed my attention for it’s versatility and seemingly endless possibilities for application.
In a nutshell, Surface Pattern Design is the art of creating repeating patterns destined for a variety of surfaces — think home textiles, wallpaper, clothing, stationery, floor coverings — anything with a surface that you would like to decorate and make a little more visually appealing. A little mind-blowing, right? I love the idea that a pattern I design can be used for a child’s bedding, a wallpaper, a lampshade, and even their favourite crockery!
If you’d like to learn more about Surface Pattern Design, you’re welcome to mail me with any questions and I’ll try my best to answer you. Have a look at my portfolio (or your fave social media platform) to see get more of an understanding of what it’s about and to see the variety of patterns I have created recently.
Do you have an idea already brewing? I’d genuinely love to hear from you!
